Why do we have the subconscious mind, dreams, and nightmares (due to anxiety)?

the subconscious mind somehow connects to the conscious mind making us remember dreams and nightmares which take place in the subconscious mind. i need to know how these two connect and how dreams get through the border between them. i have no specific reason except that my boyfriend may end up with bad dreams all the time if i don’t find out the connection. his nightmares are about me and they are due to his anxiety i got rid of previously. i just need facts. i know with this confusing **** its hard to believe i’m fifteen but i just need any information regarding the conscious and subconscious mind, dreams, and anxiety..
